Transylvania

Transylvania County in North Carolina is known as the Land of Waterfalls.     Over 50% of the land in the county is publicly owned and protected.   In addition to a multitude of waterfalls, there are sculpturers, painters and of course potters.     Throw in  their legendary white squirrels and it is an area dear to the heart of any artist or photographer.

The local brochure highlights twenty, yes 20, waterfalls adding that there are more if you want to search them out.     They give you detailed driving (and parking) instructions.     We made it to five of them and had a great day.

Our first stop was Looking Glass Waterfall in the Pisgah National Forest.     This is described as one of the most photographed waterfalls in the United States.

Isn't it amazing how gentle the water becomes after its descent.

One of our next stops was Whale Back Falls.     This wasn't on our original list of falls to locate, but we stumbled across it.

Slick Rock Falls involved  a gravel road and a couple attempts to find the turn off, but we succeeded.
These falls were only 35 feet but ended up being one of my favorites.

We visited a couple more falls, but these three areas were my favorites.    If we do this again, I definitely need to take my wide angle lens - we were really close to these and it was hard to capture the full impact.
